a virus of some sort might have corrupted one of my drives and my computer would only start up on safe mode.

i didn't want to deal with the virus on that drive so i bought a new hard drive and installed XP on it. I intended to connect the infected drive as a slave and copy important data to the new drive.

But as soon as I connect the old HD as a slave windows won't start.
The error reads as:

windows could not start
<windows root>\system\hal.dll

But if I disconnect the old HD windows starts up.

I'm just not sure what software would be most adequate to address this problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Take the old drive and put it in as a master, and remove the new drive, do a Windows Repair Install, and it should work as normal, it's not a virus.
