Receiving Operating System Error when starting win98

I am helping a friend with her computer, she has Win 98 and sometimes when she turns her machine on she gets the error "Operating System Cannot be found". If she turns the machine off and on again, it will work, sometimes it takes a couple of days for that message to disappear and for the machine to stop working. What could be the cause of this?

It could be that the connection between the HD and the IDE Cable has gone bad. The Cable might be crap.
