Whats your alls insight on the best raid config for a server running server 03 R2 with six 146gb hdds? This is a database server.

RAID 0+1

Raid 0 will suffer loss if a drive goes down.
Raid 1 is the best for backup purposes.

I too say RAID0+1 if in a large network env. Judging by your specs I would say it is a pretty large network. Reason being not only do you get the fault tolerance of a RAID5, but also a mirrored array for fast recovery.

our database machine at work runs raid 5 with one hot swap drive on a SAN array. the os is on a local disk. Be sure to separate your db and log files for best IO.

i didnt set this up, but i can prolly get you more info later.

11:12 Curtis: can you tell me why you picked raid 5 for the imagergt server? some ppl are suggesting raid 0+1.
11:12 William`: space issues.
11:13 William`: 0 + 1 is great if we had more money to invest.
11:17 William`: With raid 5 we chunked the disks and had mirroring plus online spares.

looks like we are keeping raid 5, everything is going smoothly so far and the HP Smart Start disk works well.
