Quicktime reformatting?

I just got a new Ipod Video and I have Quicktime Pro (it lets you reformat video files to the Ipod) but I have lots of files that Quicktime Pro can't play and that, therefore, can't be encoded for the Ipod. Do you guys know of any tool that can convert .avi files to something that Quicktime can read like h.264 or something? If not is there any other way to get these movies to work on my Ipod?
