I am working for my dad the next few days and need to put my win 7 laptop on his offices domain with machines that I think are running xp so that I can scan documents and index them directly from the scanner. I had his network engineer take a look but as he is a remote assistant it was via the phone and he cannot use the remote desktop connection on my laptop for some unknown reason. So he has gone off to research how to do it and I have been playing around with the network sharing system with little luck. I am guessing that homegroups are win 7s alternative to domains as it appears to advertise all the same functions but whilst I can create a homegroup I am unable to see any others to join. Network map won't comply either no matter how I set up the sharing settings and I know there is a fix for vista to see xp machines on the web but thought I would post the question before researching that as it is quite urgent and technically atm I should be working not researching this fix.
