Question about Microsoft ''Genuine Advantage''

I noticed that the Microsoft ''Genuine Advantage'' came into full swing this week. I have not had a chance to really look into it, but I do have the following question :-

Is this Genuine Advantage serial number check a once off check for your computer system?

Or is this going to be some thing that I am going to do every single time I want to request Windows Xp Updates?

I believe it checks each time you go to use the website for an update. Windows Genuine Advantage does not however apply to using automatic updates. There's a thread on here that has a link to a small java script code that gets pasted in to the address bar that disables the check.
