How to Password Protect Folders in Windows Vista, XP, 98, NT, ME

Something like that? Sadly there is no free software to do this. So either pay or find another way.

Password protection and encryption go hand in hand, and there are hundreds of free applications that do this.

Encryption is not the same as password. Encryption does that. It encrypts the information so that it can not be decoded easily. A password just protects a system but hte information can be easily read once the password is figured out.

Thats true, most persons/people don't even know what a compressed file is, even less how to open or view the contents...

Compressing files and folders using compression technology also encrypts the files. WinRAR does this.

I'll admit it. I don't get why someone would want to apply a password but not encryption. Further, it seems this is so crucial to the situation that it's worth paying money for an application that expressly states files will only be password protected and not encrypted. Paying more for less security.
