Default Problems with first build, Pls help.

Hi im having problems with my first build and any help would be appreciated.
I bought a case with 350w psu
an Abit SG-72 mobo
1 stick of generic 512 pc3200 400mhz ram
P4 celeron 2.4 ghz cpu
hitachi deskstar 80gb hd
nec dvd rw
lg cdrw

I mput it all together, checked everything was working, checked bios and everything was recognised and seems to be set up ok. The problem comes when i try to install windows xp. I put the cd in and follow the instructions, ive tryed this many times but each time there is an error of somekind. Sometimes its a blue screen that says a problem is detected and windows has to shutdown, it sometimes says DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL or PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, sometimes it gets further and just says there is a file missing or it cant copy certain files from cd or in some cases it just restarts. On a couple of occasions it has installed but it crashes as soon as i try to do anything either with an error page as before or it just restarts. Can any1 pls help as iv ran out of ideas, im struggling.
