possible directx 9.0c problem

Recently I got back in to gaming but have been having some problems. Whenever I play a game I can play for anywhere from five to thirty minutes before the game crashes and my computer freezes. The only possible thing I can come up with is that my old video card (Nvidia GeForce4 4600 ti) has trouble running the newer version of directx (directx 9.0c). I have a few reasons for believing this: It happens now but it didn't use to happen, on the same games. Its not a virus or something because I re installed windows to clean out my computer. Is this a possibility? If so can I uninstall it and install 9.0b instead? any help will be appreciated.

what video card? what game?

you should prolly check the game's website to see if there's any known conflicts.
