Here are some things you can do to protect yourself online.
1) Change your default web browser. Internet Explorer is the #1 target for hackers and viruses to exploit, that's because many people use it. Hacker target the majority, they won't go after a product that only has 10% of the share market. Consider switching to Firefox, Opera, Netscape, or Mozilla. (Get the latest version)
2) Always get the latest service packs and patch your system! Microsoft always releases new patches almost every month, set your automatic update to on. Automatic update only download and install the high priority updates, you can still be left vulnerable if you don't get the software update. So visit Microsoft Update website frequently to get every patch and update they have available.
3) Anti-Virus. Probably the most important solution is to have real-time protection. Almost all AV products will protect you in real-time (meaning itÂ’s loaded every time and constantly monitoring your system). If you don't have the money to spare, there are a lot of free versions. Some good free versions are Anti-Vir, AVG, Clamwin, Avast (recommended). Some commercial one that are really good are Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, and much more. Just remember this, all anti-virus product are not equal. Some may have more feature than the other. Take Norton for example, version 2006 has a lot of protection ranging from spyware, worm, instant messaging protection, email, browser protection, but the downside is it hog a lot of resources on low end machine. An alternative to Norton is the free version of Anti-Vir which basically just has virus protection and doesn't hog that much resource. Get what I mean?
4) Anti-Spyware/Adware Protection. Get Microsoft Windows Defender (their product that protects you from malwares in real-time mode). DonÂ’t consider buying anti-spyware product, there are freeware that can equally provide sufficient protection.
5) Delete internet track and other software activity that may be hogging up hard drive space. To ensure that your virus/spyware scans have less thing to check.
6) Firewall, Intrusion Detection, Intrusion Prevention. DonÂ’t use Windows firewall. It doesnÂ’t do much to help protect you. Get third-party software like Zone Alarm, BlackIce, any other; just make sure you have something good.
7) Windows limited user account. Windows let you create an account in the User group; this account is called limited user account in XP. This account is useful when you want to let people use your computer but denies them of administrative rights. They canÂ’t do anything that will affect the system. This account is very useful for browsing the internet and doing things you shouldnÂ’t be doing.
