poor performance

I have two computers that i just formatted and reinstalled with windows xp pro. The computers run fine until they sit over night. when i go to use the machines in the morning, windows is incredibly slow. It happened after the first night after the install and happens every night since. Its fine all day long until at night. Any ideas why this might happen?

Do you have an active firewall and antivirus? A hacker might be accessing teh computer.

yes there is a firewall and virus software. These computers are part of a small network and only two of the 6 computers are doing this.

Is it the entire computer that messes up, or just a few apps?
What are the specs of the computer? The parts may be getting too used, unless its a new PC.

The one computer computer has a xeon processor with 2 GB of ram it is several years old and was running fine with windows xp prior to the install. the other pc has a dual core processor with 2GB of ram and is a little over a year old. It was also running windows xp before the reinstall. I think that explorer is where the problem is occuring, since there are very few apps running at startup.
