IT is turned off by default with SP2. So no worries there. The pop ups have to be from something else.

To also turn it off...Start>Run>service.msc

From there scroll to Windows Messenger and make sure the service is stopped and disabled.

morning guys. okay, the Start>Run>service command didn't work, it said something was invalid. I went ahead through the add/remove components in the uninstall window and deselected windows messenger.

so. if it 'is' something else, any ideas of what i could possibly look for?(thanks for your patience)

My bad. It should read Start>run>services.msc not service. There should be the s on the end.

alright..cool, also, spybot keeps detecting a process called
smitfraud-c.CoreService

i've run the smitfraud fix, combofix and avg + spybot and the entry continues to show up. I heard that it installs itself then basically replicates off the system ram, if so, should i run spybot or something before the system startup?

Boot into safe mode. The process should not start in safe mode and it should be safe to remove then.
