outlook express, msimn.exe problems

My inbox on Outlook Express 6 was erased. It happened after downloading mail. I was able to find it in C:\windows\application data\identities..... . I copied that folder to a another place. When trying to import it I either got a message that MSIMN has caused an illegal operation and will shut down, which it did or it said that it could not complete the transfer. I am running Windows 98. I ran Norton and no viruses.
