OS prob

hi!
what my problem is i cannot install any OS greater than WIN98,
when i try to install WIN XP from the cd rom,
some of the files are being copied, suddenly it says this file(some files) cannot be copied,
but when i repeat the same setup process again,the files which could not be copied earlier were copied this time
and some other files cannot be copied it says, when i tried to skip those files in fresh installation and continue,
the same type of error msg returns in a blue screen,

STOP:C000026C{unable to load device driver}
\system root\system32\drivers\uhcd.sys
device driver could not be loaded
error stsus was 0XC000012f
if this is the first time you've seen this stop screen,
restart the computer.If this screen appears again, follow the steps:
check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
if this a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer
for any for any windows 2000 updates you might need.
If this problem continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software,
disable BOS memory options like caching or shadowing,
if you need to use safe mode to remove or disable componenets, restart the computer, press f8 to select advanced setup
options, and then select safe mode.
refer to your getting started manual for more information on troubleshootig stop errors.

but when i copied all the files in the cd rom into the hard disk,
and ran the setup from there all the files were copied but,
when the system reboots again after the copying, it says
"ntkrnl.exe cannot be loaded the error code is 7"
i use to boot it from win 98 boot-up cd and swap the disk,
i use to load the smart drive from win 98 cd,

i recently updated my hard disk from 8.4gb seagate to 40 gb samsung,
my hard disk is not detected when i go into the BIOS and and say
detect hard disks,....
but i changed the options to auto....so when it boots it detects,
and not when i'm inside the BIOS
should i update my BIOS, or change any options in BIOS like caching or shadowing, what should be done to install other OS,

please help with elaborate technical assistance.

my computer details,
PIII 550 Mhz processor on Mercury ZX9-AT V1.07 990805 motherboard,
with SiS 6326 AGP, Samsung 40 GB hard disk
AMIBIOS R1996.

Try cleaning your cd drive and make sure your xp disk is in good shape.

Is this a new install or an upgrade?
If new is it a fresh install or are you not going to reformat the drive?
Do/are you going to have multiple operating systems?
How are you going about doing this install?
You get the idea please give more details on what your trying to accomplish.
