Default OS on flash

My brother was asking his professor if he could run an operating system off of a flash drive. his professor said yes but said it was a pain in the *ss. How would I be able to do this.

OS's will wear out your thumb drive a heck of a lot faster, though.

dam n small linux runs off of a flash drive and leaves lots of extra space for all of your applications.
