Default Which Operating System?

I am building my own computer and although I am used to using windows, as is most of the world due to microsoft domination, I was just wondering if there are any recomended Operating Systems out there that are either better value for money or just plain better.

Did anyone ever think to ask what he wants to do on his computer:

IF he wants to game, then linux is not an option unless every game he wants to play is supported by linux, WHICH I doubt.

However, if he doesn't play games, and just want word processing and Internet broswing and such then Linux is a viable option.
