Opening folder problem

My friend needs help.. Win xp pro.
Whenever he tries to open folders by double clicking, it asks him what program to use to open it. Instead he has to right-click and open. I've had this happen to me before, any ways to solve it ? Thanks.

sounds like a problem with windows explorer, check for viruses or reinstall
