Opening files in Excel is REALLY SLOW

I am on a network with quite a few people and we are all using windows XP with Office XP and when we try to open files in Excel it takes about 10-25 seconds for the file to open. On some machines the drop down menu takes about 10-15 seconds to show up. If anyone has any solutions to my problems that would be very appreciated. thanks a lot.

Also, are these problems occurring with local files and files you're pulling off of the network?

we are running on a fiber connection and some people are on wireless and some are not. Sorry it took so long to reply i had to setup a new computer.

That is the only problem we are having and it is only in excel and nothing else

yes, if it is an excel file this problem occurs.
