Default ok, so i wanna reinstall windows, couple questions...

i have an external HD and i want to back up my pics, vids, music files and soem programs. After i transfer it all over how should i go about doing it. My HP came with a small portion of the C drive set aside called D: that is just a restore thing. should I use that, or do run>formatC: or what

backup, format c, reinstall windows, install drivers, install programs, copy files back.
thats what i do, ive only ever had probs from restore disks.
see what other people think as well
