Are there any differences or limitations on oem copies of xp?

Differences between OEM and Retail

OEM versions can be different from the retail version. For instance, if an OEM version that's customized for laptops is installed on a desktop there may be unknown devices show up in the device manager. I've seen this happen before and narrowed it down to the system was looking for the ports used to monitor the battery.
