Default NTLDR missing? do i have to reinstall xp?

so i understand that this ntldr file is a main boot file and is necessary. i don't know how it became missing but i ended up reinstalling windows. was there an alternative? could i have salvaged the os?
was i supposed to use an ultimate boot disk of some sort to back these files up beforehand? how did i lose this file to begin with?
thanks for any input

I had the same problem happen to me. I read on a website how to replace it but that did not work so i ended up reinstalling XP as well. I dont think that there is an alternative. However i would be happy to be proved wrong
