k, I'll give it a try when I get home...

my account is no longer on the computer...

all my files are on a seperate hard drive, and I am viewing them with windows installed on my second hd...

so...

first hd:/documents and settings/my folder* (access denied)

second hd:/windows operating system I am useing to view it...

if i run a repair on the first , could I get access back?

EDIT:

Repair won't fix this issue.
Your HDD is still formatted with NTFS.
That formatting will hold all ACL's. ( Access Control Lists )
Im sure all you have to do is reset those permissions and replace the ownership.

If that dont work, try taking your hdd out and putting it on a different system and pull them off that way but then again, you might have done that when you installed XP on the slave. Or you could rejoin your laptop to the network and work with it there and see if you can get everything back to normal.

don't do this. this is how most people lose ownership in the first place

You need to right click on the folder where your files are located.
EX: My Documents.
You should see :

See,I don't have those option on my files unless I got into safe mode. Maybe it's because I share my files and folders over a network.

I haven't tried safe mode, so I will when I get home...

all i have are the first three tabs..,

if it makes a difference, I installed windows xp on a fat32 partition and tried to access it through that... but no luck...(would have used win98, but doesn't read ntfs)

so I guess I am down to trying safe mode...

this is probably a dumb question, but how can I make my computer restart in safe mode?

the only way I have ever done it is to turn it off a few times in the middle of loading...
