noob q: copying HDs

hi

took the old one out and stuck it into my USB HD enclosure. the new one is in the case with a fresh XP install.

old one shows up but when i copy programs into new programs folder they aren't working.

already copied all the documents over.

i don't want to copy the whole thing (old windows was screwed up) but i do want my progams, how do i do it?

The old programs have to be re-instaled. When you install software there are Registry Keys that are also installed. Not just that but some applications also put the information in other places including the Program Files folder. Some are hidden while others can be found easily.

So unfortunately you have to install them again. That is the only sure fire fix. Unless you put that drive back in. Boot up. Make a backup of your Registry. Then put it back in the enclosure. Put the other drive back in. Boot. Use the Registry backup to see if you can get the applications to work. But sadly that might make this install go south.
