Noob OS question

I'm such a noob as will be apparent by my following question: I just bought "Microsoft Windows XP Home Upgrade with SP2" to install on my yet to be built PC. Will this particular OS affect my gaming performance in any way either directly or indirectly, and if so what better OS is there that I could install instead. Thanks in advance.

just one question, Why are you using and upgrade verson of xp on a computer that you are building if there's no os on it to begin with to upgrade from?
