No sound except in games or i'net

So I have windows 7 and I simply cannot figure out why I have no sound for anything played off the computer. Basically any audio or video file has zero sound regardless of format or media player used. The strange thing is sound played with chrome or firefox works (youtube, grooveshark, etc) along with sound in games. I am completely stumped as to what might have cause this and any help is much appreciated!

Try updating your audio drivers.
What computer do you have?

Yea, I am pretty sure I have done that already but I shall do it again.
I have an e5200, gigabyte motherboard, 3gb ram, onboard sound, ati 4700

What is your motherboards model number?
If you are installing drivers through Windows, Windows may be installing the wrong ones.
