Default No sound

Trying to get onboard sound to work. Realtek AC97, everything's installed OK and as far as windows is concerned I am getting sound. Only problem is, I'm not. I've tried all the noob checks: my headphones are working properly etc.

Do you have more than one active soundcard?

Hello,

Have you checked volume control to ensure that the playback volumes are up, including Wave?

Yeah, like I said, I've done all the noob checks. Drivers are installed, only one soundcard, volume settings are fine. No idea what's wrong with it. WMP will play music files, but I can't hear them.

Disable all sound cards on your PC other than the Realtek AC97 sound.

start->run->services.msc

go down to Windows Audio, make sure its started, and on automatic (not maunal or disabled)

Also, go to

Start->msconfig
click con the services tab, and make sure that Windows Audio is CHECKED..

Yep, everything there is fine.

I don't even have the cash for a dedicated PCI sound card.

You don't even need a dedicated PCI sound card, many people on TF with nice rigs use motherboard sound. It works fine, and it's a waste of a PCI slot, unless you use a 5.1CH setup.
