No re-install disks/ dead hard drive

My friends hard drive died and he has no disks (op sys. was built in the drive).

Can I use my xp disk to install on a new hard drive with his product key(on the side of his pc)?

We both have XP home but mine is sp2 and I dont think his was.

Acitvation screen comes back with "Incorrect product key".
Now what ?

Select Activate by phone and call Microsoft. When they ask, tell them that this is the first time your installing it on your PC. They will give you a key. Do not volunteer information.
