No icons on the desktop

I'm looking at a friend's computer. This is an HP Pavilion 525c and will not show any icons on the desktop. None at all. I've tried to send shortcuts to the desktop or get My Computer or My Pictures to show on the desktop, but to no avail. It seems the only thing I can really do is change the background picture. Please help! Thanks so much in advance for any advice you can provide me with.

Right Click > Arrange Icons By > Show desktop Icons.
