a buddy of mine told me if you make a new user on windows, then disable everything that runs on it except things that run games, it will make games alot faster

what are things i need to keep running so user will work?

?

there are tons of XP services that you can disable to keep them from eating up resources and making the computer a little slower, also a lot of startup programs that you can disable too.

I didn't bother creating a 2nd windows XP user, I just disabled everything I don't need. To me it seems like a pain to have a 2nd windows account, plus I don't need these services for normal computing so I have 1 account optimized.

Go to start - run - type in "services.msc" > hit enter > look at all of your services, look up each one at http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm and double click & disable services you do not need.

Also, of course, hit start, msconfig and go to startup, and research everything on your startup here http://www.greatis.com/appdata/atyouroption.htm and turn crap off on startup that you don't need.

you can download the windows XP tweak guide and do tons of little crap like that to make your pc a little faster.

Let me know if you notice an improvement.

I am subscribing to this one... this is interesting, I wonder how big of an improvement it could make...

another tip I highly recommend and is completely safe is to go to start-accessories-windows explorer-right click on C drive- untick the box to allow indexing service.

Indexing service makes it faster when you search C drive, but makes it slower to load windows & games & files.

also go to start>control panel>system>hardware>device manager>double click on your disk drives>right click on C drive & select properties>go to policies tab> click on optimize for performance and tick enable cache writing.

that is a link to the guide I used when I set up my system, I wish I woulda ran 3dmark05 before I did all the tweaks cuz I also want to see how much difference it makes. It was definetely noticable on my moms laptop.

I did all that to my moms laptop, she had 45 startup programs and was eating like 280 mb ram on startup, I get it down to 23 startup programs and eating 160 mb ram on her laptop, I went a little more crazy on my desktop, I have 19 startup programs and its using about 115 mb ram on startup. You can check by hitting control+alt+delete at the same time.
