Need help for Exchange Server equivalent

I am currently working on an inexpensive volunteer project that requires Exchange Server equivalent programs. Because this project is self funded by a few friends, we do not wish to consider Microsoft's Small business Server Solution as it is too expensive for us. Does anyone out there knows what else can we use?

Please advise us on the following issue:

Operating System that is compatible with the Exchange equivalent Server.
The Exchange Server equivalent.
Antivirus Software for the Server if it is to be opensource solution.

use windows xp for the os

merak mail server for the email server

and AVG virus scanner

only need a windows xp pc and that should do it!

Or Novell. I think it's pretty comparable and really cheap.
