I had someone come to me this morning with a dialer that keeps popping up on their laptop. Here's a capture of the dialog.....

I haven't dug too far into the system since he needs it and I'd be in the way poking around.

Any ideas on this?

Ew! Someone's been downloading porn! :)

If there's no uninstall, you have a few options. First, try running a tool like Ad-aware (Lavasoft) to see if it can't detect it as a problem. Chances are it won't, but can't hurt.

Next, try finding the folder associated with the app and delete it.

Then, go into the registry and locate the appropriate key folder and delete that.

That might clear it up.

If you are unable to delete the folder because it is in use, boot into safe mode and repeat shoobierat instructions. BTW, norton usually detects those dialers but may have problems deleting it. However, this will give you the path of the folders. Some of them hide themselves fairly well.

Ah...porn huh? Guess I'll be looking for more than the install directory.......

Thanks for the suggestions. I did try Adaware and it came up dry (on that anyway). This popped up after a software firewall was disabled, so I guess that was keeping this from being an issue since it was being blocked.

I'll see what I can find....

Oh, what's the safest way to search the registry for entries that have to do with this?

Get spybot search and destroy. They have a multitude of dialers in their data bank. It might be better than adaware in that particular case.

Make sure that you run an anti-virus after you get rid of that dialer. They will sometimes load a Trojan onto your system.

I'll try Spybot and see what it gets.

If it were my system I'd load FireFox, but it's not so.........
