MS Word hanging up

Hi all,
I'm asking for help for my brother. Here is a copy of the email he sent me. He's running Windows 98.

Hoping you can help with computer problem. When I try to open word, the
program just hangs us. The little hourglass just stays. I cannot ctl, alt, delete
to close and have to turn power off to shut down. I removed and reinstalled
word and nothing changed.
I tried to get help from Microsoft(yuk), but need a product ID which you can
only get by opening the program which I cannot do.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Possible corrupt template (normal.dot), Try going to start, then run, type winword /a, if it opens, Close Word, search for normal.dot, and rename it. Then try launching Word again.
