MS Word - Backspace not deleting?!

This is one of the most noobest questions I think I have ever asked.

But in Word, for some reason, when I highlight and press backspace, it doesn't delete. I have NO idea why! It's never happened before.

Anyone know?

p.s. its not insert! i can enter text before text without it overwriting.

(asked for disc, so had to go find it, then kept saying disc wasn't in drive, so had to restart!)
