Default MS Word alternatives

Hi, my employer has asked me to look into alternatives to using MS word. The only other one I've ever used is Word Perfect which I think is now defunct (although I did use word star many moons ago for those of you that remember it).
So what choices do i have, and how much will i run into compatabilty problems.
