The whole email application comes forward, not just a notification. Outlook becomes the active window over all other applications.

....um, no. Perhaps that would be my next step.
Does that come installed with MSOL 2002 or is it a download from MS? I only ask because I had another system's OL go down for a different reason and when I tried to run the inbox repair tool it was a d/l and after eventually getting it installed - it didn't work and I had to uninstall the whole program. (It has been a frustrating week concerning OL here....)

The whole suite comes with it. Its under Help

Thanks again for everyone's help on this. I found the problem and it turned out to be a synchonization problem between outlook and spam inspector which was pushed out of joint by the security patch that was installed last week. Still have no idea why the other computers weren't affected in the same way but it's fixed so I'm happy
