Default mpeg to dvd

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this but I figured I'd post it here anyway and see if someone could help me. I have a mpeg video that I want to compress and put on a regular dvd. Right now I it is 500 meg when I converted it to an iso it was 5 gig, how can i get it smaller?

Thanks in advance.
