Default Mp3 conversion problem

Is it illegal to use alternative mp3 encoders such as LAME and Bladeenc?

because dbpoweamp has already limited their mp3 encoder to a 30 day trial unless you buy their Powerpack. this was due to a said patent law from Fraunhofer.

just wondering if LAME is illegal even though it has a distinctive encoding technology from Fhg's.

piggysmile,

You mean, we can't encode songs with mp3 and use em?
