Default Mounting CD Image Files

I've heard of mounting CD image files but I still don't know what it is or what it does. Can anyone clear that up for me? Thanks.

a CD image contains all the data on a particular CD, you can have these on your hard drives to be burned to CD. some programs that can read the images can create a 'virtual drive' - is exactly like a CD drive but instead of using CDs it uses CD images, since it is not a physical drive
CloneCD can mount iso and ccd (clonecd images) on a virtual drive
