Office 2007, updated with all Service Packs and patches. All other file extensions open fine with exception of ".doc". When opening a .doc file, (for example, "sample.doc"), I get error message that states "The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open." Click OK, and dialog box behind it states "The file could not be found. (C:\Documents.doc)". Click OK and new box says: "This file could not be found. (C:\Documents and Settings\...\and.doc)". Click OK and new box says: "The directory name is not valid. (C:\Documents and Settings\...\sample.doc)." Click OK and document finally opens.

Can someone help resolve this issue?

Try the Office Repair.

Assuming Windows 7 since you never stated your OS:
Open up Control Panel -> Programs & Features -> find Office 2007 in the list -> Right click -> Change -> select the 'Repair' option -> Click 'Next' -> let it run through its steps.

If you suspect a document is corrupt and you can still open the document, these steps represent the "tried and true" first line of trying to recover the document:
Open the corrupt document.
Create a brand new document.
Switch to the corrupt document.
Press Ctrl+A. This selects the entire document.
Hold down the Shift key as you press the Left Arrow key. This makes sure that the very last character in the document (the ending paragraph mark) is not selected.
Press Ctrl+C. This copies the selected portion of the document to the Clipboard.
Switch to the new document (the one created in step 2).
Press Ctrl+V. The contents of the Clipboard are pasted into the blank document.
Save the new document.
Close the document you suspect is corrupted.
