Microphone issues

I have a non-usb mic that i can plug into my speakers
but every once in a while (less than an hour) my mic stops activating and i have to go into controlpanel-soundsaudiodevice-voice-testhardware for it to work. Is this a common problem or do i have something set up wrong?

dont plug the microphone into the speakers, because you might get bad feedback from the speakers.

Plug the microphone into the back of the computer, since thats where its supposed to go...
