Messengers causing problems with xp

We just upgraded my boss to Windows XP we still use a dos based program for our business. ( I know but they dont listen about upgrading) When she had windows 2k it worked fine. Now that she has XP it runs ok but if she gets an IM when she is in our database it kickes her to the desktop and minimizes it. Just wanted to know if there is a fix for this problem.

should be a notice in messenger options for notifications. Just turn them off, or if she doesn't need it disable it on startup.
