Mapping to network drive that does not exist

How would I go about mapping a network drive that does not actually exist (this is in Windows XP).
When I try either \\notaserver\notashare or \\aserver\notashare it says the network path cannot be found - which is fair enough because it doesn't but this is what I need to achieve.

Curious, how did you do it? Did you map an existing then edit the location?

Set up some shares on my PC, mapped the drives then unshared them. I was concerned this wouldn't work for my purposes, but it did the trick.
