Hi,

Was told if this forum can't help me that I'm bang out of luck so please, any advice greatly appreciated.

Just done fresh install and all a sudden I cannot right click within the my folders without the computer locking up. Also, even with customised toolbar, the computer locks up if I try to get properties of a file or delete it, cannot use CTRL + C without having to use task manager to close the non responding window.

Anyone know what gives and how to sort it please?

Thanks

(running xp pro)

Though its sounds wierd for me , i can only offer u some links , hoping u find something that helps :

http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm

This page is huge so in order to easly find ur issue , search in the page for " Explorer freezes or crashes when right-clicking a file " .

Microsoft's website , seemed to have something about that issue , but its not there any more , here is the link :

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=gp;[ln];kberror&style=error

hope that helps

Sorry about above post I usually turn off the PC after that many drinks to avoid doing nonesense like that.

Anyway,

Thanks for links Weswes will search through them now

Macdude specs are:

Win Xp pro
Service Pack 2
Athlon 2500 chip
only 768MB RAM atm (using some in the other PC -trying t network it- which is also proving to be a pain but hey)

Hardly installed anything on it yet so don't think it's down to a bad proggy I put on. Will have a search round on the link provided.

Thanks for replies and apols for alcohol idiocy

Woohoo weswes your a genius. The main page of the link you gave (http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm) stated:

Explorer freezes or crashes when right-clicking a file

A possible error message is: Explorer has performed an illegal operation

If you have Dr. DivX installed, upgrade to at least version 1.06 or uninstall it entirely. The file encodedivxext.dll is the culprit in this case.

Generally the cause is third party software that installs an incompatible codec or Explorer extension, so look particularly for software that plays, extracts, compresses, or writes multimedia content like sound or video.

So it seems it was something I installed after all.

Thanks a lot you two for replies, help and resolvement - Job well done !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:D :D
