Java download problem

When I try to download Java I get this error:

This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.

Anybody ever gotten this error before? I've tried to download it multiple
times and I get this error every time.

Which Java are you downloading? The offline setup or the online setup? Are you sure you got the full installer?

Java (TM ) SE Runtime Environment 6 update 6

Online setup, I just tried it again and got the following error:

Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid.

Did you previously have Java installed or is this fresh install of Java? Have you tried to upgrade? Check your add/remove programs area to make sure that the installer didnt finish part of the way thru previously and if so remove it.

This is a fresh install, I have recently (within the last 6 months) installed a fresh copy of XP.

Are you totally sure you're downloading the Windows version?

Yes I'm sure, . I tried to download it from a different site and it worked. I have no idea why. thanks for your help
