Default Japanese Messengers

Anybody know of an English Windows or Linux instant messenger that supports Japanese characters? Do any of the famous messengers (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, etc) support Japanese characters, without having to have Japanese Windows and the Japanese version of the messenger?

I'm learning Japanese and would like to be able to use the characters in messaging (to test my reading/writing abilities) with people online (most of whom have agreed they'd try a Japanese-compatible messenger if I found one).
