inventory software

I am looking for a free or cheap inventory control/monitoring software. We have changed vendors and the new vendor doesn't come with software. The old vendor wants $1200 to keep using theirs. NOT. Just a basic program that keeps up with quantity, cost, projected usage, etc. And will allow reports to be printed/exported.

If it's medical things especially medicine I doubt that Excel would cut it, I will dig around for you dave an see what I can come up with.

Is there any standards that have to be met or a max buget?

Max budget as in how much I would pay for it or max budget per department? It's for our housekeeping dept. They need something to track linen used, weight of laundry, chemicals, use by departments, cost etc. Excel would work, but it would be very cumbersome. An Access database with some handy VB thrown in would be nice. But I don't have the programming skills to do that in a short time.
