Default Internet Shortcut Problem

An installation of Firefox caused a system slowdown so I decided to unintall it. I'm now unable to use or create any new internet shortcuts. I am getting the following error when I clic a desktop internet shortcut.------(This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options in Control Panel) There is reference to Internet Shortcuts but I don't have a clue as how to create the required association. Help!!! b4 the wife busts my chops.

I got lucky----the problem was caused by my not having IE set as default browser. It is now and all is well.
