I recently tried to reinstall a couple of games and kept getting this error when i tried.

1607: Unable to install Installshield scripting runtime

anyone know how to fix this? thanks

The first things to try there is to make sure any antivirus or firewll programs are disabled temporarily to allow the installers to work. You will also want to make that video and sound drivers are updated as some installers are fussy that way. Try a cd lens cleaner in the optical drive as well as look over the disks used for any scratches and finger marks.

The article there would be a good one to follow if you lack the administrative permissions as that one discusses. For XP there's one great article on how to perform a repair install to review. The article seen at How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install will take you step by step through the process. But a repair install is kind of a last resort type option there.

You can also backup the current WPA.DBL file and rename the new wpa file to wpanoact.bak and simply copy the original back into the system32 folder. But reactivating XP now online is much easier at this time since Vista is automatcally checked to activate when installing the new version. Microsoft is more interested in seeing valid copies installed and easing up on the online reactivation.

Originally you couild only activate after a reinstall some 2 or 3 time witnin some 90day period or have to call Microsoft directly. The swapouts of hardwares also saw the need for reactivation there too.

It was longer then 30 more like 60 where you ran into a snag initially. At this time and with Vista having been installed 3 times in under a month MS has made things a little easier since they know people want to dual boot the new version along with XP.

When forced to move one version of XP to a different drive and of course reinstall XP Home on the primary for a multi boot with Vista the Home's mbr was rewritten at the recovery console to see if the VistaBootPRO actually found first would re-enter XP into the Vista mbr. NADA! It was the same with the original EasyBCD and BCD editor despite articles seen on adding XP later. Vista then saw the third install and immediate acttivation.
