the page file is kind of like virtual ram when it runs out of physical ram it will begin copying files frantically to the hard drive trying to free space on the ram. this process is MUCH slower than physical ram and actually slows down the computer increasing the paging file doesn't do much of anything for you unless you are running out of page file and ram. most of the time when your page file gets to high its time to upgrade your ram don't bother with increasing your page file unless you are running out of it.
