Default how to record ram file?

hi all.
i am trying to record a ram audio file fm website using audacity 1.2.3. but i cant get it to work. when i click record while the audio is playing the cursor starts moving but no soundwave comes up. in sound settings in windows control panel i have the recordong source set to line-in.
the only time i get any recording is when i set recording source to wave out mix but its very noisy and you can barely make out the original audio.
i'm using win xp2.
any help? suggestions?
